Short bio Jacob Praetorius
Full biography Jacob Praetorius
Jacob Praetorius was a German composer and organist who lived in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He was born in 1586, and is sometimes referred to as Jacobus or Jakob Praetorius, or by his German last name Schultz(e). He was the son of Hieronymus Praetorius , who was also a composer and organist.
Jacob Praetorius studied with Jan Sweelinck, a leading organist-composer of the time, and went on to teach many others, becoming a notable figure in his own right. His works included vocal and instrumental music, such as masses, motets, and organ music. According to Johann Mattheson, a German composer and theorist who lived a few decades after Praetorius, he was particularly known for his keyboard works.
Despite his achievements, Praetorius is not as well-known today as some of his contemporaries, such as Johann Sebastian Bach. Nonetheless, his work played an important role in the development of Baroque music, and he is still remembered and respected by those who study his life and work.
