Heinz Wunderlich was a German organist and composer, born on September 14, 1919, in Dresden, Germany, and passed away on March 10, 2012, at the age of 92. He was one of the most important and influential musicians of his time, particularly in the realm of organ music. Wunderlich is considered to be one of the most important interpreters of the music of Max Reger, a composer who greatly influenced his work.

Heinz Wunderlich began his musical career at a young age, and he made his public début as a concert pianist in 1929. He later turned his attention to the organ, studying with Karl Straube. Wunderlich became the organist at St. Johannis in Lüneburg in 1945, and he held this position for almost thirty years. During this time, he gave numerous concerts and recorded extensively, becoming widely known for his interpretations of the music of Max Reger and Johann Sebastian Bach.

Wunderlich was also a prolific composer, and he wrote music for organ, choir, and orchestra. Among his most notable compositions are his Sonata in G minor, Symphonische Suite, and Partita über "Nun freut euch, lieben Christen g'mein."

Heinz Wunderlich received many honors and awards throughout his long and illustrious career. He was made an Honorary Citizen of Lüneburg in 1972, and he was awarded the Lower Saxony State Medal in 2002. In recognition of his contributions to music, he was also made an Honorary Professor of the University of the Arts in Berlin in 1991.
