Gottlieb Muffat was a German composer born on April 25, 1690, in Passau, Bavaria. He was the youngest son of Georg Muffat, a composer and court Kapellmeister. Gottlieb Muffat served as Hofscholar under the famous Austrian composer Johann Fux in Vienna starting in 1711, where he honed his skills as a composer and organist.
Muffat confined his work as a composer to writing music for the organ or the harpsichord , making contributions in particular to the development of the harpsichord suite. His compositions were influenced by the works of his father as well as other composers of his time, including Handel, Telemann, and Couperin.
In addition to his work as a composer, Muffat was a keyboard virtuoso whose career was based around the Viennese Imperial Court. He was appointed to the position of organist to the Holy Roman emperor and eventually became an important figure in the imperial court's musical establishment.
Muffat's compositions are characterized by their intricate and virtuosic keyboard writing , as well as their use of popular Baroque dance forms, such as the sarabande, allemande, and gigue. Muffat wrote extensively for the harpsichord, and his works in this genre include a set of six suites published in 1739.
Despite his significant contributions to Baroque keyboard music, Muffat's work is relatively underappreciated compared to that of his contemporaries. Nonetheless, his compositions have remained popular among harpsichordists and other keyboard players, and his music continues to be performed to this day.
