Fran Lhotka (25 December 1883 – 26 January 1962) was a Czech-born Croatian composer and conductor known for his late Romantic style of music. He wrote choral works, song cycles, and instrumental music, including concertos for the violin and orchestra.
Lhotka was born in Mladá Vožice, Czech Republic, but spent most of his life in Croatia, where he became a prominent figure in the music scene. He studied music in Prague and later moved to Vienna where he continued studying composition and conducting.
Lhotka's music is characterized by its strong contrasts and brilliant orchestration. He often incorporated folk music into his compositions and is known for his arrangements of Croatian folk songs. He also composed several operas, including "Hersilia" and "Ked nevychádza láska" which were both premiered in Zagreb.
In addition to his compositions, Lhotka was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Zagreb Academy of Music and his pupils included well-known Croatian composers such as Blagoje Bersa and Bruno Bjelinski.
Lhotka passed away in Zagreb on January 26, 1962, leaving behind a rich legacy of music that continues to be celebrated today.
