Elizabeth Maconchy was a British composer born on March 19, 1907, in Hertfordshire, England. She was the daughter of the Irish painter William Victor Maconchy and his wife, the pianist and music teacher, Ann Alice Maconchy. Elizabeth Maconchy's early musical education began with her mother, and she later studied composition and piano at the Royal College of Music in London.

Maconchy composed music in a variety of forms but is best known for her works for orchestra, chamber music, and opera. Her style was characterized by its clarity, economy, and emotional intensity. Her music was admired for its skilled craftsmanship and subtle harmonic complexities.

Early in her career, Maconchy faced challenges as a female composer in a male-dominated field. However, she persisted, and over time her music became widely recognized for its excellence. She was awarded the prestigious Cobbett Medal for services to chamber music in 1977.

Maconchy was also a prominent teacher and advocate for new music. She taught composition at the Royal Academy of Music, where her students included Judith Weir and Diana Burrell. She was also an active member of various musical organizations, including the Society for the Promotion of New Music, the Composers' Guild of Great Britain, and the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors.
