Marxsen received his musical education in Hamburg, where he studied composition with Friedrich Kuhlau and piano with Johann August Wilms. Later, he continued his studies in Vienna, where he became an accomplished pianist and garnered praise for his performances.

As a composer, Eduard Marxsen wrote about 70 works, including an orchestral work named Beethoven's March in F Major , two piano concertos, a sonata, and four suites for piano. His music was characterized by a Romantic style, with influences of Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach. Although he was not widely recognized as a composer, his music is still appreciated by many.

However, Eduard Marxsen is better known for his work as a teacher. He taught in Hamburg for more than 50 years and is best known for having taught Johannes Brahms.
