Full biography Charles Wood
Charles Wood (1866-1926) was an Irish composer and teacher, known primarily for his work in Anglican church music. He was born in Armagh, Northern Ireland, and began studying music at an early age. As a young man, he studied at the Royal College of Music in London and later at Cambridge University, where he became a pupil of composers Hubert Parry, Charles Stanford, and Charles Villiers Stanford.
Wood is best known for his compositions for the Anglican church, including many hymns, anthems, and choral works. He was particularly skilled at setting words to music, and his melodic and harmonic style was well suited to the traditional texts used in Anglican worship. In addition to his sacred music, Wood also wrote songs and chamber music ), particularly for string quartet.
Despite his success as a composer, Wood is perhaps equally well known for his work as a teacher. He was a professor of music at the Royal College of Music and later at Cambridge University, where he influenced many young composers and musicians. He was known for his dedication to his students and for his commitment to the development and advancement of musical education in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
