Short bio Alexandre Charles Lecocq
Full biography Alexandre Charles Lecocq
Alexandre Charles Lecocq was a French composer who was born on June 3, 1832, in Paris, France. He was known for his light operettas that were popular in the 19th century.
Lecocq began his musical studies at the conservatoire in Paris, where he studied under the tutelage of François Bazin. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1856 with his cantata La Séduction, which granted him a scholarship to live and study in Rome for three years.
After completing his scholarship, Lecocq returned to Paris and began composing operettas. His first success was Fleur-de-Thé (1868), but it was his work La fille de Madame Angot (1872) that propelled him to fame and fortune.
Lecocq had a talent for light and charming melodies, and his music was often described as witty and sophisticated. His work was well-received by audiences across Europe, and he became one of the leading composers of operetta during his time.
In addition to La fille de Madame Angot, Lecocq's other notable works include La Petite Mariée (1875), Giroflé-Girofla (1874), and Les Cent Vierges (1872).
Lecocq's legacy continued long after his death on October 24, 1918. His music has been revived in modern productions across the world, and his catchy melodies continue to delight audiences to this day.
