Short bio Alexander Mosolov
Full biography Alexander Mosolov
Alexander Vasilyevich Mosolov was a composer of the early Soviet era , born on August 11, 1900. He is best known for his early experimental works, including the famous "Iron Foundry" from 1926. Mosolov's works showed a unique style that combined elements of futurism and a love for industrialization, a common theme in early Soviet music. However, his success was short-lived. In 1936, Mosolov was banished from the Union of Soviet Composers and imprisoned for his "formalistic tendencies," which was a common term used to describe music that was deemed too experimental or non-conformist to the Soviet ideal.
Mosolov continued to compose, but his output declined significantly after his banishment. He died on July 11, 1973, leaving behind a relatively small body of work that included symphonies, concerti, and chamber music. Despite his brief tenure as a prominent composer, Mosolov's "Iron Foundry" remains a well-known and frequently-performed piece in the classical repertoire, and his influence on early Soviet music cannot be overstated.
