ZWEERS, BERNARD

By Grove Dictionary on July 7, 2013 in Z

(b. Amsterdam, May 18, 1854; d. Dec. 9,1924), composer. He was at first self-taught, but finished his studies, 1881, with Jadassohn in Leipzig. He then returned to Amsterdam, where he worked first as a choral conductor, and later chiefly as a teacher of theory and composition. Zweers, who was much influenced by Wagner's music, has written, amongst other works, three symphonies, music to Vondel's ' Gysbrecht van Amstel,' and many choral works. His third symphony, for a large orchestra, 'Tomy Fa therland ' (1890), gave him a distinctive place amongst Dutch composers. R. M
