( b . Livonia, Nov. 10, 1854), singer. He was born on the p roperty of his father and received his education in Germany. In his 21st year he began to learn singing a t the Hochschule, Berlin, and continued tho study under Stockhausen a t Frankfort, and Bussine in Paris. Ho made a speciality of the German Lied, particularly tho songs of Schubert and Schumann, the latter of which ho studied with Madame Schumann. His voice had a peculiar and sympathetic quality ; but what gave Zur Miihlen's singing its chief charm was the remarkable clearness of his pronunciation, and the way in which ho contrived to identify tho feeling of the words with the music. Ho sang in London first in 1882, and was a frequent visitor later. o.
