(b. Ostroff, Russia, Aug. 26, 1879), violinist. At the age of 15 he made an extraordinarily successful debut a t Odessa with Tchaikovsky, who conducted his own concerto. As a consequence the composer got up a subscription to send Zacherewitsch to Prague, where he studied for nine years under Sevfi'k. He had also the advantage of a few lessons from Ysaye. In 1893 he played a t Amsterdam under Mengelberg, and in 1903 gave his first recital in London, after which he toured the English provinces. He returned in 1909 and frequently later, and played with success, displaying considerable breadth of style. w. w. c.
