PADILLA-Y-RAMOS, MARIANO

(b. M u r c ia , 1842 ; d. Nov. 1906), a Spanish baritone singer who married Desiree A r t o t (q.v.). He studied under Mabellini in Florence and sang in Italian opera in most European countries. His appearances in England were comparatively few. His first was on Oct. 1, 1881, when he sang the pa rt of Hoel in ' Dinorah ' with success. He played in 1886 in the short season a t Her Majesty's and in the autumn with Mapleson's company in the provinces. In 1887 he was a t Covent Garden. In the same year he sang a t Prague in the centenary performance of ' Don Giovanni.'
