a piece of music of a melancholy cast, probably synonymous with L ament (q.v.). In 17th- and 18th-century books of instrumental music the name is occasionally met with as a title to a piece ; for example, ' The Irishe Dumpe ' in the ' Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.' The following is a late instance from S.
