William Duckworth was an American composer, author, educator, and Internet pioneer ). He was born on January 13, 1943, in North Carolina and passed away on September 13, 2012. Duckworth wrote more than 200 pieces of music, including chamber, choral, and orchestral works, as well as numerous electronic and computer pieces. He was also the author of six books and numerous articles on music and technology.
Duckworth studied at East Carolina University and the University of Illinois , where he earned his doctorate in music in 1973. He later served on the faculty of Bucknell University, where he taught music composition and theory for more than 30 years.
One of Duckworth's most notable works is the "Time Curve Preludes," a collection of 24 solo piano pieces that he wrote in the 1970s. The collection reflects Duckworth's interest in post-minimalist music, and its use of gradual tempo changes and microtonal tuning systems is considered innovative.
Duckworth was also an early adopter of computer technology in music composition, and he used it extensively in his later works. He was an advocate for using the Internet as a means of disseminating music, and he developed the first Internet-based composition course, which he taught at Bucknell University.
In addition to his musical work, Duckworth was also a significant figure in the early development of the Internet. He is credited with coining the term "hypertext," which refers to the non-linear, interconnected structure of information on the World Wide Web.
