Short bio Marc'Antonio Ziani
Full biography Marc'Antonio Ziani
Marc'Antonio Ziani was a prominent Baroque-era composer and opera professional born approximately in 1653 in Venice, Italy. He began his career as a music director in his native city and became the primary composer of operas in the region. Later in his career, he moved to Vienna, where he held the position of Vice-Kapellmeister at the Imperial Court from 1698 until his death in 1715.
Ziani's operas are known for their virtuosic solos, particularly for various instruments. He was also prolific in his use of the trombone in his oratorios, and his works are characterized by their cantabile style of writing.
Ziani had a significant influence on Viennese opera at the end of the seventeenth century. The scholars suggest that his style was an inspiration for later opera composers such as Johann Joseph Fux and Antonio Caldara. Caldara, in fact, visited Vienna to seek out Ziani, who became one of his musical mentors.
Today, Ziani is still celebrated for his remarkable contributions to the music genre of his period, primarily in vocal and operatic music. His works gained significant popularity and were performed frequently in his time, and today, he is remembered as one of the most important composers of Baroque music.
