Douglas Stuart Moore was an American composer, songwriter, and educator, born on August 10, 1893, in Cutchogue, New York. He is best known for his folk operas , which deal with American themes and stories.
Moore was a prolific composer who wrote for a variety of mediums, including theater, film, ballet, and orchestra. Despite his success as a composer, he also worked as an educator and author, teaching music at Columbia University and Yale University. He also wrote several books on music, including "The American Opera Singer" and "The Sesquicentennial History of St. Luke's Church in the City of New York."
Some of Moore's most famous works include "The Ballad of Baby Doe," an opera based on the life of Elizabeth "Baby" Doe Tabor, and "Giants in the Earth," a ballet adapted from O. E. Rølvaag's novel of the same name. Throughout his career, Moore was known for his ability to capture the essence of American culture in his music, and many of his works have become staples in the American canon.
Moore passed away on July 25, 1969 in Greenport, New York, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and creativity in American music. His contributions have inspired many composers who followed in his footsteps, and his influence can be heard in the work of contemporary American composers today.
