Full biography Dick Raaijmakers
Dick Raaijmakers (1930-2013) was a Dutch composer, electronic and tape music pioneer , multimedia artist, and a theoretician. He is considered a key figure in the Dutch electronic music scene. In the 1950s, Raaijmakers, along with another Dutch composer Tom Dissevelt, started his experiments in tape music. He studied physics in Delft and musicology in Amsterdam, where he also studied composition with Ton de Leeuw. Raaijmakers is known for his pioneering work with electronic music equipment, which he constructed himself, and his innovative use of everyday sounds in his compositions.
Apart from his work as a composer, Raaijmakers was also active as a writer and theorist, and played a crucial role in the development of new media art in the Netherlands. He wrote extensively on electronic music, multimedia, and the relationship between art and technology.
Raaijmakers was a co-founder of STEIM (Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music) and later served as its artistic director. He also taught at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and was a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.
Some of Raaijmakers' notable works include "Intona," "De materia sonora," "La lâme de l'objet," and "Der Fall/Déposition." His influence on the development of electronic music and multimedia in the Netherlands and beyond continues to be felt to this day.
