Bulent Arel was a composer of contemporary classical music and electronic music , born on April 23, 1919, in Istanbul, Turkey. He wrote chamber music, vocal works, and symphonic pieces, including a series of works commissioned in recent years by the Mimi Garrard Dance Company. Arel was educated at the Ankara Conservatory and later moved to Paris, where he studied with Nadia Boulanger. He moved to the United States in 1959 and worked at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, where he collaborated with fellow composers such as Luciano Berio and Mario Davidovsky. Arel's compositions have been described as pioneering and innovative, pushing the boundaries of traditional music composition. Some of his notable works include "Electronics I," "Music for a Sacred Service," and "Stereo Electronic Music No. 1." Arel passed away on November 24, 1990, in Stony Brook, New York, at the age of 71.
