Alexandre Barjansky was a renowned Russian cellist and composer of the early 20th century. He was born in Odessa (in present-day Ukraine) as a distant cousin of Adolf Barjansky , a composer of classical music for solo piano and chamber music. Alexandre Barjansky began his musical education in his hometown and later studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he became a student of Anatoliy Brandukov, one of the greatest cellists of his time and a frequent performer of works by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and other notable composers.

Throughout his career, Alexandre Barjansky performed extensively throughout Europe, the United States, and Asia, earning a reputation as one of the most talented cellists of his generation. He played on a variety of instruments, including the famous Barjansky Stradivarius, which he borrowed from his uncle, Dr. Serge Barjansky, also a cellist. Barjansky's virtuosic playing was praised for its expressive intensity, technical precision, and beautiful tone.

As a composer, Alexandre Barjansky wrote several works for cello, including his Cello Concerto in C minor, which premiered in Moscow in 1925 with the composer as the soloist. He also arranged works by other composers for cello, such as Ernest Bloch's Schelomo, which Bloch dedicated to Barjansky after the two met in the United States. Additionally, Barjansky composed several works for solo piano, chamber music, and voice.

Alexandre Barjansky's legacy as a performer and composer continues to be celebrated today. His recordings remain highly regarded by classical music enthusiasts, and many of his compositions have been preserved and are still performed in concerts worldwide.
